Constituents: Flowering tops: Flavonoids, Phenolic acids , Triterpenes, Sterols, Volatile oil Mucilage, Tannins. Leaves: Cyanogenic glycosides. Berries: Flavonoids, Anthocyanins, Vitamins A and C and sugar.

Actions: Increases sweating, Diuretic.

Medicinal use: Coughs and colds, Catarrh allergies, arthritis.

Cautions: Allergic reactions.

Research: Indications that the flowers reduce inflammation.

Folk-lore: One of the oldest : Used in Rome in 11th century.Chopping elder branches was considered dangerous in rural England as it was believed that the tree was inhabited by the Elder Mother and to avoid her wrath woodcutters would recite a rhyme.Druids believed this also and the tree was sacred Frau Holle. The “witch goddess” dances were performed at the summer solstice when the elder bloomed. In the 16th century it was believed that the leaves should be gathered on the last day of April and hung on doors and windows to prevent witches from entering the house. A twig of elder carried close to the body was said to give good health and luck. The juice was taken as a spring cure. Leaves were used for bruises and sprains
