The different forms of diets being promoted today via the various forms of media have increasingly become more and more confusing, conflicting and void of any forms of nutritional value.
Modern day growing techniques are also a major factor in the quest for nutrition. Many of our foods today are actually hybrids and have been man made. The problem with these products is that our bodies are not evolving as fast as food technology, so we are not able to digest the nutrients as effectively as the original natural foods that we have evolved with.
The ways of cooking our foods have also added to the depletions of the nutritional resources needed to maintain a healthy body, that many THINK they are addressing.
The confusion is demonstrated by typing in DIET in your google search bar in 0.44 seconds 676,000,000 results were found.
The following paragraphs are Wikipedia’s take on Diet
In nutrition, diet is the sum of food consumed by a person or other organism. The word diet often implies the use of specific intake of nutrition for health or weight-management reasons (with the two often being related). Although humans are omnivores, each culture and each person holds some food preferences or some food taboos. This may be due to personal tastes or ethical reasons. Individual dietary choices may be more or less healthy.
Complete nutrition requires ingestion and absorption of vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids from protein and essential fatty acids from fat-containing food, also food energy in the form of carbohydrate, protein, and fat. Dietary habits and choices play a significant role in the quality of life, health and longevity.
A close look at the quality of today’s foods grown, though the look may be visually improved the nutritional value in most cases has been severely compromised. This has reached a point where certain foods contain nothing like the nutritional value what they had 30 years ago.
So today we find ourselves with anecdotal stories on a researches carried out. A recent example is on the contents a box of cornflakes tested for nutritional value against it cardboard package resulted with a lower nutrition score than the cardboard.
What must be noted is that even if there are no visible signs of health issues, maintaining a bad diet will build up dis~ease in the body.
Our MAIN FOOD ENEMIES
• SUGAR pure and simple one of the MAJOR players in any dise~ase. This is the hidden devil in many of our drinks and processed foods.
In the African Diaspora this is where many of the problems of health are initiated. Diabetes known for its link to sugar. Cancer feeds off sugar, obesity and all the other dis~eases linked are also a known subsequent of excess sugar.
A report from the Caribbean revealed the following:
Healthy Caribbean Coalition was intrigued to see how the imported branded cereals presently consumed in Barbados compared. Shockingly, the cereal products consumed in Barbados are among the most sugar-packed in global comparison. Over half of the cereals surveyed classed as “high sugar” cereals (over 22.5g of sugar per 100g of cereal); for children under 4 years of age, the recommended “free” sugar allowance of less than 5 percent of daily calorie intake is instantly blown with only one bowl of cereal for breakfast.
The confusing information on sugars are again a major cause for concern as in reality no processed sugars are a healthy option.
Raw sugar differs very little from white sugar, except that the crystals of raw sugar are larger and have more colour. In spite of trace amounts of minerals in molasses, brown sugar contains only slightly more nutritive value than raw sugar because the amounts added back are so small.
Our beloved chocolate is also an area of confusion and concern
• Chocolate (Cacao or Cocoa) another good example of confusion can be found in our favourite Cacao or is it cocoa. The following will shed some light……
Raw cacao powder is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. The process keeps the living enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat (cacao butter).
Cocoa looks the same but it’s not. Cocoa powder is raw cacao that’s been roasted at high temperatures. Sadly, roasting changes the molecular structure of the cocoa bean, reducing the enzyme content and lowering the overall nutritional value.
The studies that boast of chocolate’s amazing health benefits are likely not referring to your average store-bought chocolate bar (damn misleading researchers). The chocolate that they’re referring to has properties closer to raw cacao.
So we have a reality where today more than ever we need to be conscious of what food or medicines are good for us to eat/administer, and what is not.
Conflicting information can be found everywhere, another perfectly good example is Soya. Once hailed as the food for vegetarians/vegans. Now it is seen as a possible cause of cancer. Many of the pharmaceutical medicines being prescribed today by doctors are causing more problems than initial complaint. Antibiotics are losing the battle against bacterial diseases.
